How To Overcome Travel Fears

I have massive travel anxiety. It stresses me out till the point that I cry silently on my bed imagining all possible outcomes. It's pretty bad.

I don't know if you guys know this, but I will be moving to Japan soon! (Not for ever). I honestly don't know why I thought it'd be a good idea to spend a semester abroad. The emotions upon the days of my departure from the land of the sun corrupted the sanity of my thoughts. I'm gonna come back, I said. And going back I am. But at what cost? (Several thousand dollars and my sanity).

I don't know what has me more twisted. Traveling on a plane for 12+ hours again or being on my own for about 5 months.

I am an odd human soul. I crave companionship, I need a human presence near me, but at the same time I like being on my own.

If you ask me to pick between going to a concert or having out in a museum I'd have to ask with whom. I'd go to a concert if I had someone to be with, if not I'd go to a museum. I hope I make sense.

Anyways, this massive change in my life has had me a bit frantic. I usually try not to think too much about the upcoming chapters of my life. I avoid it. So very much. Which is a problem, because the time is crawling to an end. Months became weeks. Soon to become days. To hours. These thoughts bring wrecking sensations to my skin. Picture that episode from spongebob, where we get a glimpse inside his mind and there is chaos, havoc and lots of screaming.

That's me.

Becoming an adultier adult is creeping towards me.

All though, all is not lost! Because I have slowly overcome this anxiety and fear. SLOWLY

1. I plan things - by planning things the idea of being in a foreign country for long doesn't seem as insane. I have already planned a vacation, and few sites I wanna visit and what I will be cooking for the first month.

2. I talk to friends - Sometime that has helped me a lot is talking to my friends. And by talking I freak out and ramble on to them until I exhaust myself into oblivion. It is nice exerting my feelings out to someone who is not myself or my bird. Especially when someone friends pat my head and tell me that I am a Queen and I can conquer anything. (And they'll push into bushes anyone who hurts me.)

3. Distraction, Tea, Distraction - Moving and traveling is overwhelming in general. The act and the thought. So I keep myself distracted with activities such as working out, reading, working and reading.

4. Tell yourself everything is gonna be okay - Every night I lay in bed and remind myself that this my path and my story. These will be the interesting parts I will get to talk about, and everything will be okay.

I am very pathetic I know. But I embrace my pathetic awkwardness.

I feel like this massive leap of "I can do it" will help nudge the other dreams I have in the corner hiding, waiting to be taken a look at.

Maybe it's just me.

Traveling is fun, adventures are fun, having your own place is fun.

Shades of Magic | Join the Adventure

Image a world where several dimensions of the world we live in touch one another as thin walls waiting to be opened. Image London, good.

Now image four Londons, and the borders the keep the dimensions from collapsing on top of each other thin. Nice and thin. Almost like paper. Paper you have to cross through.

Image a man, by the name of Kell. One of the few people who can make this passage between the different dimensions. Kell is also a bit of a smuggler. An illegal business of transferring objects from other dimensions to other. Image this man, this smuggler, getting caught. By a cross-dressing pirate who can slit your throat if you don’t follow her words.

I'd rather die on an adventure than live standing still.

Are you intrigued yet? I hope so.

Blood, Ink & Fire by Ashley Mansour | Book Talk

This book was provided to me by Net Galley and Upturn Publishing for an honest review.
"IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT BOOKS...
In the future, books are a distant memory. The written word has been replaced by an ever-present stream of images known as Verity. In the controlling dominion of the United Vales of Fell, reading is obsolete and forbidden, and readers themselves do not—cannot—exist.
But where others see images in the stream, teenager Noelle Hartley sees words. She’s obsessed with what they mean, where they came from, and why they found her.
Noelle’s been keeping her dangerous fixation with words a secret, but on the night before her seventeenth birthday, a rare interruption in the stream leads her to a mysterious volume linked to an underworld of rebel book lovers known as the Nine of the Rising. With the help of the Risers and the beguiling boy Ledger, Noelle discovers that the words within her are precious clues to the books of the earlier time—and as a child of their bookless age, she might be the world’s last hope of bringing them back."

Blood Ink & Fire sets place in a dystopian future where books no longer exist. (Scary).

Life is controlled by United Vale of Fell (Fells for short) and their stream called Verity.

Come in Noelle who has the special and forbidden skill of being able to read words. She is the last reader. After her life is turned upside down by a series of events, she sorta-kinda embraces her destiny of the reader who will free everyone from Vale and Verity.

Blood, Ink & Fire follows the similar format of Divergent/Hunger Games. One big powerhouse with several “factions/districts” that they control.

In this book it is Fell versus the nine sovereignties.

Noelle is the heroine of the story, and I use that title lightly because she was not very heroic. She was actually very selfish and ignored all advice given to her. (Maybe it is just me; I will let you form your own opinion dear reader)

Noelle, like I said, was very selfish. She assumes she is doing the best for society, but in reality she is doing things that are best for herself. People gave up their life and freedom for her, so she can stay safe and protected. People DIED so Fell wouldn’t get to her. Instead of honoring their death and gaining some character development she did what she told everyone one she was going to do: Not be the chosen reader and safe the world. I understand having such a big destiny thrown upon you is hard to deal with and many people will freak under the pressure. But what she did…was…just…so stupid, annoying and selfish. Noelle allowed herself to be doomed from the start. Most protagonist rather risk their life to safe others. She was the exact opposite. I prefer Katniss to Noelle! (That is saying something cause I really can’t stand Katniss)

Even if the main character got on my nerve I was really intrigued with the concept of a bookless world. As I read it, this bookless dystopian world, I realized the importance of books. Not just for story telling, but history, science, knowledge. BOOKS ARE IMPORTANT, WRITTEN WORD IS IMPORTANT.

Something that made me really happy about this dystopian concept is that Mansour gave books a soul. I mean a literal soul. The soul of ALL the books appeared upon Earth to help the reader. (And he was hot)

“Books need the reader, just as much as the readers need the book.”

This soul of all books has a name. His name is Ledger and he is perfect. There are a few chapters that were in Ledger’s point of view and they were magical. Beautiful. Poetic. I wish the whole book were written in his point of view.

“Time had passed around him like a swirling doc of star matter, taking shape, forming constellations, creating patterns…”

AAAH! I LOVE DESCRIPTIVE WRITING SO MUCH.

It is probably clear by now that Noelle and Ledger are the couple of the story. It could be considered insta-love, but once you read the book you’ll see that his attraction to her is because of the body he took over. And he is the soul of all books, and her being the last reader sorta gives them that connection. It’s the way readers fall instantly in love with certain books. I don’t know, it made sense to me.

Ledger is great. HE HAD MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAT NOELLE!

Anyways, story wise I enjoyed it. Character wise…meh. Geography/world building wise I was a bit confused, I was not quite sure how Fell was located with the surrounding sovereignties. I know it is in Northern United States with some Canada…but I couldn’t really picture it well.

I would recommend this book, even though I had some problems with the main character. Maybe she will redeem herself in the sequel.

There is also a dog and she is precious.

"No Mourners, No Funerals"

Fictional Guys Have Ruined My Life

The title says it all. Fictional guys have pretty much ruined my life and expectations for anything (and everything).

As someone who has read about 200+ books in last 5-7 years I can proudly say that I have fallen in love with several people. All being fictional. (*cue in music*)

I cannot remember who my first love was, but I can name my current ones (your read correctly, there is an “S” there).

The thing about fictional guys is that they are flawed and perfect.

He can be the crowned prince of a country, but underneath the beautiful blonde hair and brown eyes is a caring sarcastic puppy that needs to be held. He can be half-human with sea-green eyes and face that turns from killer to sweetheart in a matter of seconds. He can be a geek that is into tweed jackets and journalism as he discovers that he can see into the future. Or maybe he can a scary thief that will rip out the eyes of any person who hurts the one he likes. ( don’t forget cute princes that betray and hurt you!)

There are a lot of them…

The thing is, when you step into the shoes of the protagonist of the story…their life becomes yours. You are part of their thoughts and actions, and when they start falling in love with another person…well so do you.

While you are off saving the world, finding yourself or having an adventure…you are also falling in love with the guy next you. (Leading guy or not).

I, personally, strongly dislike most romance novels, because the main character has this instant falling in love thing that is SOOOO unrealistic. I hate when romance leads the plot, because it is so predictable. They meet and have instant falling in love moment, then there is a problem and their relationship is at risk, finally everything works out THE END.

I know what you are thinking; ALL ROMANCES USUALLY FOLLOW THAT SCHEME. Yes. You are right, but when there is more than romance in a story it becomes more fun. Do I make sense? The leading lady has to safe the world and figure out if the butterflies are her nerves or dokidoki feelings for a guys.

I love Maxon, Throne, Kaz, Percy, David, Kell, Dorian, Magnus (Falling Kingdoms), and Howl…just to name a few.

It is hard, because you pretty much compare every guys you meet to all these fictional guys and are like, “Nope, you’re nothing like x-character. You’re not good enough for meeeeee”

Welcome to my life.

#readwomen December

Living in Miami during winter times might seem like a bore. Nothing expressed in every Christmas film known to man will occur down here in warm, sticky Florida. While this might be disheartening to some (AKA me) recreating the magic of Christmas is easy.

You don’t need cold winter nights under the blanket. Or cute earmuff to protect your ears from the harsh icy winds winter has to offer. Snow? Nope.

Even though the typical winter wonderland will be all but a daydream here in Miami. You can still make your home Christmas wonderland and do all the things the people up north do…like drinking hot chocolate (in 80F+ degree weather).

My wintery season will mostly consist of reading books and drinking hot drinks during the hot weather.

Alongside enjoying the wonderful holiday season, I will participate in a wonderful trend called #readwomen. It is a wonderful trend that all of you should participate as well!

Dedicate all the books you plan on reading to just women authors. If a woman wrote a story and published it with her beautiful name on the cover, pick it up and read it! Let’s show support and appreciation to all the wonderful female authors that grace us with such wonderful stories and adventures!

Finding Hope by Colleen Nelson | Book Talk

Finding Hope by Colleen Nelson

*I was given this book by NetGalley and Dundurn for an honest review*

I was first attracted to this book by the simplicity of the cover.

Finding Hope explores the lives of Hope and Eric; siblings that reside in a small town. Lumsville is town where nothing happens and everything is boring. Except for Hope and her family. Her brother is a meth addict and her family is slowly falling apart. Hope momentarily escapes this madness through her poetry, hoping for a chance to escape.

The opportunity comes, and Hope packs her bags and heads to Ravenhurst Academy as a boarding student ready for a fresh start.

At first, Ravenhurst is better than anything Hope could've dreamed of. But as quickly as it started, her life at Ravenhurst goes spiraling down of control. With roommates, online boyfriend, school cliques, and her meth addict brother.

When I first began the book, I was not sure how I felt about it. The beginning was rocky, because there was no sense of a timeline. At one point I was not sure what time it was. The constant change of point of view from Eric and Hope I was not sure if it was weekend, weekday, morning, day or night.

Even though the beginning was strong, straight to the point of whom the characters were and what their stories were. But once Hope arrives to Ravenhurst time seems to flow better.

I was very intrigued by Eric, watching him go from high and semi-sober. (Kinda like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) The change in his train of thought demonstrated his two state of being of high and not high. Nelson does a great job showing the destruction drugs inflict on someone. She also did a marvelous and slow reveal of why Eric turned to meth. Why he chose to escape into a mentality of constant high.

Hope was raw. You really see her darkness through her poetry. Her poetry through out the story really gave the reader what she is really feeling and going through. She was easily manipulated which got her bullied by the Ravenhurst clique. This intense bullying made her weak, and nearly saw suicide as the only option.

Great portrayal of how abuse can emotionally destroy someone and cause their life to go on a downward spiral.

This book is not for everyone, and I would not recommend it to a lot of people.

There is drug abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and suicide thoughts. This can be a trigger book, and for those who suffer any of those thing should not read this book unless mentally prepared.

Finding Hope was raw. It was different. The subject matter was something new in the world of YA. It was short and heavy.

I wish we could have read more about Eric when he was put into rehab.
