I’m always S*** for Riordan Mythology | Book Talk

I was in ninth grade and Borders was still a semi-stable bookstore company. I do not remember what led me to ask my mom to buy me a complete set of books…but I did. I think we were looking for a book I needed for my English class or something, but on that day I returned home with the complete paperback set of Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. My memory is fuzzy on how quickly I devoured the stories, but on 2010 I continued the journey of the Greek world of Camp-Half Blood with the new Heroes of Olympus series.

Six years later I am proud to say that I am slut crazy for Riordan’s stories. I also discovered my love for Percy Jackson (my favorite book character of all time…presently). It was Riordan who put me back on the reading bandwagon after my…vampire literature phase…

The stories of Percy Jackson (at least the first five books) we watch Percy grow in each book. Much like Harry in the Harry Potter series. Percy is a demigod, the son of Greek god Poseidon, and he learns that being a demigod sucks and it is not something he would wish upon anyone. He didn’t ask to be a demigod. I was 14 when I read the first book and Percy was 12, even though he was younger than me, I wanted my life to be a crazy deadly adventure like his. (I know…wtf?)

Today I just pray to the heavens my poor baby survives another quest. And question Riordan’s butchering of Percy’s inner demons in Blood of Olympus. Sorry getting side-tracked.

I have branched off and dabbled in Riordan’s other mythology pools. I have met Carter and Sadie Kane, Egyptian magicians, who have to make sure the world doesn’t turn into sand as they try to figure out how to bring back Ra. Even though I have only read the first book of the Kane Chronicles trilogy I know I am in for another great adventure. Filled a bunch of gods, demons, and Goth God of Hotness.2: Anubis.

Recently, Riordan released a new series. A Norse series called: Mango Cheese Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. I absolutely loved it, Magnus is my fictional son and if anything happens to him I might send Uncle Rick a very angry 10-page letter.

Something I absolutely love about Riordan’s stories is that they all connect. All these Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse gods are in the same universe. I like this, because I do not completely agree with Christianity and their whole concept of only being one single god. Of course, these books are not religious at all, so no worries.

In his three mythology series there are subtle hints of the other stories. In the Kane Chronicles there are subtle hints of Percy’s world and his gods. Carter’s uncle warned them that Manhattan is inhabited by other gods so he needed to be careful (which left Carter extremely confused). There is even a cross-over (that I have not read) where Carter and Percy meet, along with Sadie and Annabeth!

Then in Magnus Chase…who is Annabeth Chase’s cousin (she is a Greek demigod, daughter of Athena), there are a bunch of hints and shade thrown about Greek series.

Can you tell that I really like Rick Riordan’s stories? I own practically all his mythology stuff…someone send help.

Next May he is publishing a new series based of the world of Camp Half-Blood called Apollo’s Trials… and I wont be here!!! I might actually cry if I get spoiled…

I just…augh! I need help!

Rose Originals | Simply Loots

Recently, I purchased some wonderful soaps from a small home business called Rose Originals.

I was strolling down the main hall of my University when cute pastel colors suddenly caught my attention. Being the dork I am, I went and fetched my friend so we could snoop around the table.

Rose Originals is ran by lovely lady named Rose who makes all sorts of handcrafted body care products that are 100% eco-friendly and organic based.  They even use locally harvested honey and beeswax (which was a really neat fact).

As a person with really problematic skin, I have to be extra careful what products I put on my skin, because if something is chemically based my skin will reject it. I either breakout, get rashes, become itchy or worse. So I pay the extra dollar in order to ensure I get the highest quality product that wont cause my skin to have a freak-out.

I usually do not buy skin products without knowing what they are made off, especially if they are handcrafted, because (no offense) I do not know if everything you put on the ingredients is true or not. I initially was not going to make any purchase from Rose Originals because of this fact.

BUT! Rose Originals has a YouTube channel that shows you how their soaps are made and what is put in them. My friend and I spent half an hour watching the videos until we finally decided to return to the table and purchase some soaps.

I purchased Caribbean Coconut and Sweet Thing.

I am currently using Caribbean Coconut as part of my daily shower routine. And I am happy. It smells like a fruit smoothie (in a good way) and coconut. I love anything coconut based, and it is also very good for your skin! Every time I lather with the soap, my skin is left nice and soft as it absorbs all the coconut oil goodness. Then, when I come out of the shower I can still smell the hints of coconut of my skin for a good hour or two. It is just lovely. It makes me feel like a tropical goddess.

I have not used Sweet Thing. ( Why would I have three bars of soap in my shower?) It is currently sitting on my desk, because that is clearly where unused soaps go. But since it is always on my desk, you can sometimes catch me having a wiff at it. It also contains coconut oil, but the main fragrance is a cranberry plumy goodness. I also feel like it has a hint of a rosey smell, but I am crummy at identifying flower smells other than lavender.

I am over-joyed with my purchase and the minute my soap finish disintegrating into my body I plan on ordering some more! ( You should as well! Worth the money.)

They also have body butters, sugar scrubs & lotion bars. I hope that maybe in the future I will have some of those products in my possession as well.

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins | Book Talk

I need you to image the fabulous Elle Woods from Legally Blonde. Image her stylish clothes, her positive attitude, her brilliance and her ‘do what you believe in mentally’. Is her picture in your mind yet? I hope so; now imagine her southern, accent and brown hair. Now to that southern Elle Wood, blend her together with Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Congratulations! You’re currently seeing Harper Price, the protagonist from Rebel Belle a book by Rachel Hawkins.

Rebel Belle is very hard to explain, so bare with me. There is this girl named Harper and she is the definition of a southern belle. She is class president, head cheerleader, homecoming queen, and the school’s queen bee. On the night of her homecoming prom she finds herself in a really weird situation with the school’s janitor and her history teacher. The janitor isn’t a janitor at all, he is actually a Palidin; a protector.  And the janitor has been stabbed and about to die when he passes his powers to Harper. Harper, against her will, becomes a Palidin. Then Harper is placed in a confusing and complicated situation where she obtains strange new powers and has no clue what they are for or what she should be doing. (Like possibly saving the world and the boy she has hated since kindergarten)

I dove into this book thinking it was going to be super girly and possibly hating Harper. I was wrong. Yes, there are some girly elements to the book because that is who Harper is, a girly girl. Thankfully, it doesn't distract from the story nor become super annoying, because of all the action packed scenes. (Remember what I said about Buffy.). All the girlyness was overshadowed by how kick-ass Harper was and how she handled every situation.

The characters were fantastic, and many of them, like David Stark, were super funny. There were multiple times were I was giggling like an insane person and I would get funny looks from the people around me. They didn’t understand.

Like most YA novels now a days there is a romance, and a slight love triangle. The triangle was not overwhelming like most novels, but hinted at. Thankfully, it was a hinted triangle and not actual one (Thank the Hawkins). Also, the romance was not a key point to the story. I repeat: romance was not the main element! (Hallelujah). Harper is with and mentions her boyfriend, Ryan, several times through out the novel, but it is not: Ryan this, Ryan that, Ryan Ryan Ryan, OMG Ryan. It more like: Oh damn my date with Ryan is today, I need to protect David, oh damn we are being chased, I need to learn how to sword fight in heels, where is my lip-gloss?

If you want try something new and magical, my dear reader, go get a copy of Rebel Belle. And after you have finished reading Rebel Belle let me know your thoughts, feels and reactions.

For the College Soul | Simply Books

Sometimes when you pick up a book and begin to read it, do you feel discouraged because you are no longer of high school age? You're not young enough to receive a letter, battle monsters, go on an adventure or even fall in love? It is as if the only real time to be alive to be alive is during your high school years. And if your life in high school was quite and meaningless with no life changing adventure across the country with you friends...then what stories can you connect to? What fictional character can you be like in current position of your life?

There is no need to loose hope because even though it seems that high school was the time to live and get all the great adventuring done. There are worlds and stories out there that don't require for you to be any for of teen.

Which is fantastic because as a newly twenty-year-old I feel a bit disconnected when every story is based on high school age. Recently, I heard John Green say that it is easier to write teenagers because they are still discovering themselves (hence easier to create and write). This statement bothered me a tad because 90% of twenty-year-olds out there have no flipping clue either. They might have a general jist of who they may be, but we are still discovering themselves. (at least I am).

I am grateful for authors who write for us older kids (we who are not aldulty adults )

Rainbow Rowell is an example of an author who does such a thing. Two stories that I recommend from her are:

Fangirl: (For the college audience)
Cath is a Simon Snow fan. For Cath, being a fan is her life--and she's really good at it, she is the definition of a hard core fangirl. She and her twin sister, Wren, we both hardcore fans of Simon Snow every since they were children. But now they are college freshmen.

Cath's sister has grown away from the Simon Snow fandom, but Cath can't let go. While entering college Cath’s twin decides that she does not want roommates. Leaving Cath on her own for the first time. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words.

Cath to explore and find inner strength to figure out if she can do this.
Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

Landline: (For the slightly older audience)
Georgie McCool is a TV writer, and her marriage can be considered on the brink of breaking. Then one day Georgie visits the past, but not the way you would expect. She receives a phone call from the past. Once Georgie realizes that the magic phone in her old childhood bedroom is in the past she uses it to fix the relationship and make things right with her husband Neal.

This phone call is a chance to fix all the problems in the present, or so Georgie thinks. The phone call could be a chance to start over, but the big questions is:
Does she want to start over? Or will she be willing to let Neal go?

Then we have the fabulous J.K Rowling who has written three adult novels (going on four):

The town of Pagford holds a facade of a perfect little place, but the surface is a bunch of lies. Behind that facade the town is at war with each other. Rich at war with poor, teenagers with their parents, husbands with their wives, teachers with their pupils.
Then when Barry Fairbrother suddenly dies, and leaves a casual vacancy, the town is left in shock and their corruption slowly starts seeping through as people fight over Barry’s seat on the parish council.

A brilliant mystery following the story of Detective Cormoran Strike who investigates a supermodel’s suicide.

Cormoran Strike is an Afghanistan war veteran who lost his leg to a land mine. He barely scraps by as a private investigator. But when he finally gets a big case, he learns that there is more to the suicide than meets the eye.

My current favorite author, Victoria Schwab, brings fantasy and sci-fi to the mix of contemporary and mystery.

[I can’t properly describe this book without giving too much away, so here is the amazon description]
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates--brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find--aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge--but who will be left alive at the end?

The story follows a guy named Kell who is a rare traveler-magician with the ability to jump between parallel Londons in different universes connected by one magical city.

Gray London is our London, a London without magic. Red London is Kell’s London, a London flowing with magic. White London is a London that is dying and losing its magic. Black London is a London that was destroyed many centuries ago.

Kell is a red traveler and he carries messages back and forth from the different London royals.
On the side, Kell is smuggling tems back and forth between different Londons for people who are curious and want to see a glimpse of another London that they will never be able to travel to.
During one of these travels, Kell finds himself in a bit of trouble when he finds out an item he is smuggling is dangerous.

He runs into Lila Bard who is a thief and a cross-dressing pirate. After she robs him and then saves him, they then join forces on an epic adventure the parallel universes.

For those who want a more subtle magical aspect, Erin Morgenstern's novel is perfect for the souls.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.

A classic set of stories that should be read everyone in their twenties, J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Filled with magic, adventure and mystery

But you must be aware, that age is but a number set upon society to represent that time you've been roaming the earth. Don't let the number define who you should be or how you should act. Diana Wynne Jones explains this beautiful in a novel that has to do with the power and magic of oneself.

Sophie has the misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.

eShakti | Simply Looks

While I was away in Japan I was sent a beautiful dress from a lovely company called eShakti. I was given the liberty of choosing any dress from their collection. I feel very blessed to be given this privilege as a young and new blogger.

After finally moving and settling down in my new home I finally got the opportunity to wear the dress I received from them.

I asked for this lovely blue dress with flower embroidery. (My obsession with flowers in strong). The fabric is cotton and the flowers seemed to be almost sewn by hand. My mother was so in love with the dress that she wanted to wear it herself, but unfortunately we are not the same dress size. Most dresses I order online usually look cheap and nothing like the picture online. Thankfully the eShakti dress looked exactly like in the picture and it fit me just right. Love the fact that this site has dresses/skirts/shirts in sizes 0 to 36W and they also customized for a nominal fee.

Something fantastic about eShakti is that you can customize the dress to however you feel looks best on you. Sleeves or not sleeves, long or short, v-neck or round collar. It is completely up to you! And you can even send them your exact measurements to ensure that the dress will fit you. I have never seen an online clothing store that gives you this opportunity.

It is Real Fashion for Real People.  eShakti understands that every Small, Medium or Large body is different and they embrace this reality and make dresses that will be perfect for everyone. They even make dresses with pockets, the best invention since Nutella.

Everything about them is perfect. Shipping is fast and reliable (they send the tracking number). I will definitely will be making some purchases in this store, especially after all the compliments and praises I received!

For first time customers you receive a $30 off on your first purchases after creating an account! Also, the first time you decide to get a dress made exactly your body measurements will be free!

You can also find eShakti on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest!

Simply Me | Looks

Today I was very pleased with my outfit. It was kinda thrown together nice a quick as I rushed through my morning routine so I wouldn't be late to work.

It felt very me. I bled my very essence in my clothes today. Which was a very nice feeling. I don't have a definite style or a definite fashion sense. Some days I'm chic, some days I'm hipster, some days I'm girly, some days I'm a hobo. But if I were to explain my fashion sense I tell them: a mixture of the hipster style with the Japanese girl aesthetic that lives for flowers.  It really doesn't make sense to be honest.

But today it yelled: Wanna be flower bookworm! (Queen).

A skater dress, jumper, knee highs and boots.

The dress I purchased during my stay in Japan. I don't really remember the name of the store but it was a Japanese version of H&M and Cotton On. The dress was only 500 yen! (About 4.50 USD)

The jumper is from a Harry Potter themed store called Whimsic Alley. I came across this Quidditch jumper at Geekycon. And I had to have it...even though I am not a Gryffidor. I felt bad, a Ravenclaw purchasing a Gryffidor Quidditch jumper! (Don't tell JKR) in my defense! The Ravenclaw colours didn't look good on me because 1) it was movie colours and 2) it was light blue rather than navy blue. Red looks so much nice against my skin tone.

The socks came from sock store in Japan. It was 350 yen which would be about 3 USD. These are also "slimming" socks, that helps your legs become slimmer. (Japan is strange). Now my boots I've owned since I was 14...so 6 years. I honestly don't remember where I got them. Could be Forever 21 or some other store with the same style.

Now my favorite piece of the whole "I love Harry Potter, flowers and my style" outfit is the bracelet on my right wrist. It is a book quote, but a very important one. It is the last words written in the last book of the Harry Potter series. "As was well". This bracelet is hand-made and came from a cute little shop called Little Shop of Hodge Podge. They get old damage books and give them new purpose. I feel so delighted that now I can carry a bit of Harry Potter with me where I go. They all sorts of books as well as designs so I plan on purchasing more book jewelry from them soon!

Swinging back | Journal

It has been a while since I have written or done anything. My life once I returned to Japan was a dull one, falling in a constant rhythm of nothing. Wake up, waste time, go to bed.

Though it could be argued that I have not "wasted timed" I have gotten quite a few tasks accomplished.

For starters I have moved homes, and all those who have moved know that it is a mission and a half. Moving takes a lot of a person both physically and emotionally. Even now, two weeks residing in this new place, I feel like I am at a stranger's place. It is by far most weirdest sensation.

In my absence from the electronic world I have slowly found myself. And did a lot of reading.

I have a total of five books so far.
- This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel
- Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
- Vicious by V.E. Schwab
- All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
- The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

I also re-read Howls Moving Castle but I don't really think that counts for anything other than just reliving another story.

While I slowly get back to the swing of things I would like show some of my favorite loot from Japan.

A Fuji-film camera that I purchased in BiC camera, which was near by the main Kyoto Station. A pen that is CardCaptor Sakura theme. (Everyone in Japan knows this is my favorite anime ever). And a small jewelry box in the shape of the Castle from Howl's Moving Castle. It is actually more like a puzzle, with bits and pieces you have to combine together to make whole.

Hopefully I get a new video up soon on my YouTube Channel. I have so many ideas I wish to share everyone, I just need to get around to filming them~

Watch out for me because I am about to rise~
